In a recent development, former Indian skipper Virat Kohli had to return home from the South Africa tour due to a family emergency. According to the latest news reports, Virat Kohli missed the ongoing three-day intra-squad encounter, which is underway in Pretoria.

Virat Kohli chose to rest from the white-ball matches during the ongoing multi-format tour. The star batter recently traveled to South Africa for red-ball matches but had to return to India due to a family emergency. However, the exact reason for the emergency is not clear.

Virat Kohli To Join Indian Test Squad On Friday – Reports

As per the Cricbuzz report, Virat Kohli will return to Johannesburg in time for the first Test. He left for Mumbai three days ago, with permission from the team management and BCCI, skipping the practice game. His anticipated return is scheduled for Friday, December 22.

The first Test between India and South Africa is scheduled to commence on December 26 in Centurion. Virat, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah joined the squad after skipping the white-ball games, while Mohammed Shami has been ruled out of the series due to injury.

Kohli has an impressive record in South Africa in Test cricket, scoring 719 runs in seven Tests at an average of 51.35, including two centuries and three fifties. It’s worth mentioning that Virat emerged as the leading run-getter in the recently concluded ODI World Cup.

Ruturaj Gaikwad Ruled Out For Test Series Due To Injury

The report further stated that sources within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed that Ruturaj Gaikwad has been ruled out of the Test series. Ruturaj has not recovered from a finger injury, leading to his release by the Indian team management.

Ruturaj sustained a finger injury in the second ODI against South Africa, causing him to miss the final ODI due to fitness concerns. Unfortunately, there is no likelihood of his recovery before the two Test matches. The 26-year-old is anticipated to return to India on Saturday.

Before the start of the third ODI on Thursday, the BCCI announced that Ruturaj Gaikwad had not fully recovered from the impact to his ring finger sustained during fielding in the second ODI. The BCCI also confirmed his continued supervision by the medical team.

“(He) hasn’t fully recovered from the blow he sustained to his ring finger while fielding in the second ODI. He remains under the supervision of the BCCI Medical Team,” the BCCI stated.

Indian Players Showcase Promising Performances In Practice Game

Indian players, including Sarfaraz Khan and Abhimanyu Easwaran, showcased promising performances in the ongoing practice game. Skipper Rohit Sharma, pacer Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, and Shardul Thakur also delivered good performances.

The Indian team is set to assemble in Johannesburg, traveling to Centurion for the Boxing Day Test on December 26. Following the series opener, the Indian players will head to Cape Town for the second and final Test of the red ball series, starting on January 3.
