BMW has revealed the 2025 M2 half an hour after showing the updated BMW 2 Series, and the improvements are small and subtle but very impactful. Among them, a 20-horsepower output boost, a 0-60 mph time that has been shaved by a tenth of a second, the arrival of BMW Operating System 8.5, and the long-awaited addition of more color options.

There have also been refinements in cabin styling and a slight price increase; while the 2024 model is listed on BMW USA’s configurator with a base MSRP of $63,200, the 2025 model starts at $64,900 (excluding $1,175 for destination and handling). Let’s see if the additions are worth the increased cost.

More Power, Baby!

The S58 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged straight-six engine under the hood of the M2 has been massaged to deliver an additional 20 ponies, resulting in the same 473 hp that you get from the base M3. Peak power arrives at 6,250 rpm, 950 rpm before the redline. Torque has also been increased, but only with the automatic transmission. The six-speed manual is still available and peaks at 406 lb-ft of torque (2,650-6,130 rpm), but the eight-speed auto now offers 443 lb-ft between 2,700 and 5,620 rpm. For reference, the M3 delivers 36 lb-ft more.

With the increased power, the manual M2 shaves a tenth from its 0-60 mph time and now achieves the sprint in 4.1 seconds. The automatic is unchanged at 3.9 seconds, and the top speed remains the same for both variants: 155 mph as standard or 177 mph with the optional M Driver’s Package. Along with the added power, BMW has remapped the accelerator for improved response.

A Splash Of Color

For the 2025 model year, the M2 comes in three solid colors, seven metallics, and four Individual hues, including some Frozen (matte) finishes. Some are from existing BMW products, while Voodoo Blue and Grigio Telesto are famous Porsche and Lamborghini shades, respectively. In no particular order, these are:

• Skyscraper Grey metallic
• Frozen Pure Grey metallic
• Frozen Portimao Blue II metallic

Elsewhere, the four exhaust tips are now finished in black as standard, and so are the badges, albeit with a silver border (someday, these badges may become digital). If you like Jet Black, the standard Style 930M 19- and 20-inch staggered wheels are great, but if not, you can have them finished in a bi-color scheme. New for 2025, a bright silver finish is also available.

Revised Interior

Like the latest M4 and M3, the cabin has been updated with a flat-bottomed steering wheel. This features a red 12 o’clock marker and is trimmed in leather, but Alcantara is optional for a grippier rim, as is a heating element. Cast your eye further into the cabin, and you’ll find that the BMW Curved Display (a 12.3-inch driver info display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen) now features BMW Operating System 8.5. With this latest version of iDrive, the climate controls for the air conditioning system, seats, and steering wheel are now touch-operated, annoying reducing the button count in the cabin. Fortunately, these functions can be easily accessed with a dedicated section at the bottom of the display. Alternatively, you can use voice control to adjust temperatures.

Also worth mentioning is that the M Sport seats you get as standard can be had in Black with Red accents on the Vernasca leather. If you’d rather have the racy M Carbon buckets, we have more good news: you no longer need to spring for the optional Carbon Package and can specify the lightweight seats as a standalone option. Standard accent trims come in M Fine Brushed Aluminium, but M Carbon Fiber and Aluminium Rhombicle Anthracite are optionally available. Finally, the BMW Live Cockpit Professional system has been bolstered with the addition of Augmented View, which overlays directions on the images captured by the front camera. These virtual directions appear in the driver display to help with tricky navigation routes.

The new M2 will be built at the San Luis Potosi plant in Mexico and will launch globally in August 2024.
