A Quick Introduction To Mopar
What’s In A Name?
What does Mopar stand for? The brand name ‘Mopar’ is actually an accurate description of exactly what the company first and foremost offers to the car community – ‘motor’ and ‘parts’. This mash-up of two words was first used as a product name back in 1937, and over the decades has grown into one of the most recognizable and trusted car parts brands out there.
A Brief Overview Of Mopar’s History
Mopar first began as a brand name for antifreeze products in the late 1930s, but things quickly progressed from this point. The Second World War allowed Mopar to expand, as the firm began producing parts to support the war effort. From car parts through to vehicles and weapons, WWII provided a lot of opportunities for Mopar, and success didn’t stop there, either. A comprehensive line of products was developed for all Chrysler Group vehicles, before the Mopar Parts Depot in Michigan was opened in 1953.
The following decades saw many gearheads and muscle car enthusiasts begin using the term Mopar to describe their cars – typically a car produced by one of the original Chrysler-owned brands, such as Plymouth and Dodge. During this period, Mopar started to build an enviable reputation for their performance parts, such as race engines and individual tuning parts. A parts delivery system was also launched in the ’70s, further separating Mopar from the crowd.

Mopar built upon this success throughout the following decades, moving away from simply parts supply, and introducing total customer car solutions for anyone with a Chrysler-associated brand – which included Jeep from 1987 onward. Post-2000, Mopar has been focusing on further streamlining every service it offers, by introducing new technologies such as while-you-wait express service lanes at dealerships, and useful smartphone apps.

Mopar Provides Parts And Services To Stellantis-Owned Brands
Originally, Mopar cars would be any model that was produced by one of the original Chrysler Corporation brands. These manufacturers were Plymouth, Dodge, Ram, DeSoto, Chrysler and Imperial. Fast-forward to today, and only three of those brands still exist: Chrysler, Dodge and Ram.
However, following a merger in January 2021 of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and the PSA group, Stellantis became the latest custodian of the Mopar name, and so many more brands now fall under the Mopar umbrella of care. In addition to the established and traditional car manufacturers, Mopar now also covers brands such as Jeep and Alfa Romeo, to name but a couple. Parts between Stellantis brands are often interchangeable, so don’t be surprised if you come across Chrysler-name parts on your Abarth or Maserati.
