Flexible Side Skirts Coming To Mercedes-AMG Supercars

The only difference between these three is the exact method for deploying the side skirts, what sort of material is used for the flexible element (to maintain a seal between the side skirt and the ground), and how the side skirts are actuated. In the case of this new Mercedes patent, an elasticized material would be pushed toward the ground by a shape-retaining component, and this component could also control the outward movement of the skirt so that it does not disrupt airflow coming from behind the front wheels.

If you think this airflow is relatively inconsequential, just take a look at how heavily Porsche modified the fenders and doors of the 911 to create the high-downforce GT3 RS.

Will this Mercedes patent reach production? We could see it on a future Black Series version of the new AMG GT, or it could be consigned to the automaker’s archives for all time. It all depends on cost versus efficacy, but given how many automakers are exploring the idea, it will probably become more than just an idea very soon.
