Get rid of ‘tough’ pet stains cleaning with £1 bathroom item

No matter how many times we clean up after our pets there seems to be something else that we find. As a nation of pet lovers, it is no wonder that we go above and beyond for our animals.

Whether it is paw prints on the sofa or mud on the carpets, owning a pet is never easy.

However, one expert has come to the rescue with their cleaning tips. Laura Rich, a product development lead at home and experts at Furniturebox have done all the hard work for you.

So, if you’re a pet owner then you might want to make note as this is what you need to know.

She’s shared her four low-cost cleaning tips including a £1 bathroom staple for getting rid of ‘tough’ stains.

Don’t scrub

We have all been there with our pets and have had muddy paw prints scattered across the home.

Rich said: “For muddy paw prints, let it dry first. Don’t rub or scrub at the area as you risk damaging the fabric or pushing the dirt deeper into the fabric.

“Instead, once dry, hoover as much dry mud as possible. Then use a blunt knife to scrape away at the remaining mud.

“On carpets, which are designed to be a little tougher than fabric furniture, you can also gently brush at it with a steel brush hoovering up as you go. Then you can use the same cold water and bicarb method as for liquid stains to remove any final muddy stains.”

Tough stains

It turns out there are two ingredients which are a match made in heaven in saying goodbye to tough stains.

The expert advised: “Mix a quarter teaspoon of detergent (non-bleach) or white vinegar mixed with water.

“Apply in a blotting motion using a clean cloth – avoid anything tissue-based, as it will break down too and leave paper pills on the surface. White vinegar is so great for cleaning because it contains acetic acid, which breaks down some dirt, oil, and bacteria.”

Bathroom staple

You might be more wary about which products you use on your carpets and we can totally see why but Rich said there’s one ingredient that does the job.

She explained: “Shaving foam can be used to clean stains on fabric carpets and upholstery including faux leather. It doesn’t matter what brand, as long as it’s white.

“Cover the stain with foam, and leave it for up to 20 minutes, then wipe away, rubbing gently at the remaining stain. Repeat as necessary. A can of white shaving foam can be bought for as little as £1.”

Nose Prints

It might be cute and sweet when we get a kiss from our furry friend but it can often leave a mark when they are near a window or glass table.

The pro said: “As cute as seeing our dog’s nose prints all over our windows and tables can be, they can be a pain to clean off.”

“You can banish the ‘boop prints’ by making your own glass spray by mixing equal parts white distilled vinegar with warm water and adding it to a spray bottle. Then, just wipe it with a clean, dry cloth or kitchen towel. Follow up with a dry microfiber cloth to get rid of any streaks.”
