Cantwell, Alaska – Below, please find a statement from PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman in response to disgraced Iditarod musher Dallas Seavey’s announcement that a snowmachine struck dogs being trained by his kennel, killing two and leaving others in critical condition:

Dallas Seavey can now add these dogs’ traumatic injuries and horrific deaths to a record that already included racing dogs who tested positive for opioids, operating a kennel accused of killing dogs who didn’t make the grade, and owning a property where a whistleblower reported finding dying puppies. When mushers like Seavey seek Iditarod glory, dogs pay the price with their lives, and PETA is calling for this race to end before the death count rises any higher.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
