Stop towels shedding and ‘prolong their lifespan’ using drying method

Scratchy, hard towels are incredibly unpleasant to use and can become unabsorbent if they’re old.

If your towels are particularly old or are not of the best quality, they could begin to shed.

With this in mind, leading bathroom wholesale retailer, Wholesale Domestic, has shared how to prevent towels from shedding.

Brian Toward, founder of Wholesale Domestic said: “Shedding tends to occur from the manufacturing process and the quality of the materials used to make the towels.

“Towels are typically made from various fibres such as cotton, bamboo, and microfibre. During production, fibres can become loose and eventually detach from the towel’s surface, resulting in shedding and a harsh feeling when drying.

“As expected, lower-quality towels tend to be those with shorter fibres, making them more prone to shedding, so choosing to buy towels made from specific materials can reduce shedding and improve overall durability.”

Brian said that towels made from long-staple cotton are less likely to shed and are also softer, more absorbent and less likely to get so worn out.

If you have towels that aren’t cotton or are of lower quality, you can still prolong their lifespan and prevent shedding by cleaning them correctly.

Brian suggested “always” washing new towels on a gentle cycle with mild detergent before using them.

This will prevent excess fibres from falling out when you use it for the first time.

It’s also imperative you use a low-heat setting if you choose to tumble-dry your towels.

However, whenever possible, it’s best to air dry your towels. This will save you money on your electricity bills too.

Brian added: “Regularly inspect towels for loose threads or snags and trim them carefully to prevent further shedding.

“Avoid pulling on loose fibres as this can cause damage to the towel’s weave. Rotating between multiple sets of towels allows each set to rest between uses, reducing wear and tear and prolonging their lifespan.”
