Mercedes has recently revised its seven-seater SUV, which blends practicality and impressive performance. The AMG GLB 35 utilizes Mercedes’ belt-driven starter generator and the additional 48-volt onboard power supply as standard. The starter generator serves as a mid-hybrid, with the 48-volt technology improving comfort and allowing for the use of a start/stop function. All four corners of the SUV are powered by the four-cylinder engine and are paired with the automaker’s eight-speed AMG DCT. At 5.4 seconds to 60 mph, the GLB SUV is the slowest AMG SUV on this list.

The GLB 35 model carries over into 2025 with the revisions from 2024, which include a standard AMG Performance steering wheel, the latest generation MBUX infotainment system, an AMG-specific screen design, and several new driver assistance systems like Active Lane Keeping Assist. Pricing starts at $60,100, excluding destination.

Mechanically identical to the GLB 35, the AMG GLA 35 also received an update for the 2024 model year, with the same enhancements introduced to its powertrain and interior and an expansion of its options list; this carries over into 2025. The GLA 35 relies on the same 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine as its GLB counterpart and has the same outputs. However, the GLA 35 has a 0-60 sprint time marginally quicker than the GLB 35 due to it being smaller and lighter. Again, like the GLB model, the GLA35 utilizes an eight-speed AMG DCT to row through its gears and employs its RSG as a mild hybrid system alongside the 48-volt technology.

It’s more powerful than the models before it, courtesy of a turbocharged six-cylinder engine, but even so, it’s only two-tenths quicker than the smaller GLA 35 above. Both the coupe and SUV models dispatch the sprint in under five seconds, and it can tow as much as 7,700 lbs, which makes this a practical and powerful vehicle in all respects. It makes use of a nine-speed DCT to send power to all four wheels, and by virtue of its higher performance specs, is also a little thirstier. The EPA lists 18/23/20 mpg on the city/highway/combined cycles for the SUV, with the Coupe version dropping to 22 mpg on the highway.

One step close to being the quickest, the AMG GLC 43 SUV and Coupe are by no means the most powerful GLCs on the market, but they do get to 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds. The SUV models cost $67,100 to start, and there’s 416 hp to motivate it; rapid acceleration aside, the GLC 43 can also haul as much as 3,500 lbs while earning a relatively decent gas mileage score. The EPA suggests the SUV model is slightly more frugal, with 19/25/21 mpy as opposed to the 18/24/21 mpg of the coupe.

The Mercedes-AMG G63 is arguably the most recognizable AMG SUV in Mercedes’ lineup. The 2025 model year has been updated for the second-generation SUV model. It employs a handcrafted 4.0-liter BiTurbo V8 engine as previous model year renditions have done, but features a 48-volt on-board electrical system now accompanied to support the hulking eight-cylinder power plant at lower engine speeds, offering an additional 20 hp and 148 lb-ft. Paired to the 4.0-liter V8 engine is a nine-speed AMG TCT transmission characterized by its short shift times and double de-clutch throttle feature.

One of the new possibilities for the AMG G63 SUV is the Mercedes-AMG Active Ride Control suspension system, which relies on active, hydraulic roll stabilization and adjustable adaptive damping to improve handling and driving comfort. The medley of a powerful electrified V8 engine, a snappy transmission, and a permanent all-wheel-drive system with a two-speed transfer case allow the 5,842 lb SUV to sprint from a standstill to 60 mph in a hair over 4 seconds. A more powerful electrified version is in the cards for 2025, but due to its weight penalty, the automaker claims it’ll be slower to 60 mph.

The AMG GLS 63 is one of the larger and more expensive models in the lineup, starting at $149,500 for the 2025 model year. Despite its size, the GLS 63 comes with 603 hp which will hustle it to 60 mph in just a little over four seconds – a tenth quicker than the smaller G 63.

At the core of the SUV is a handcrafted 4.0-liter V8 engine that is used in AMG’s other “63” models and also relies on the 48-volt on-board electrical system and an integrated start alternator, which includes a boost function. This ISG performs hybrid functions, which include boosting, energy recuperation, gliding, and engine restarting when the start/stop function is used. The twin-scroll turbochargers are positioned in a hot-vee configuration, which means these components are placed between the cylinder heads to reduce the distance exhaust gasses need to travel, thereby increasing responsiveness.

Mercedes has updated the AMG GLE 63 S, both the SUV and Coupe SUV configurations that are lauded for their versatility, and those changes carry over to 2025. It is not only an athletic offering from Mercedes-AMG but also capable of serving as a perfect fit for families. That said, this family SUV can complete a 0-60 mph sprint in less than four seconds, making morning school runs exciting. The GLE 63 S’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine is augmented by 48-volt technology, akin to the configurations of its SUV stablemates, and features Mercedes’ ISG. Although matching the output of the GLS 63 S, the 5,567 lb five-seater family SUV is capable of a significantly quicker sprint time, which is the result of the collaboration of the Mercedes 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system, the nine-speed TCT, and the power-laden V8 engine.

671 hp @ 6,750 rpm combined output

While the models that have come before have commanded high outputs through a handcrafted V8 engine, the AMG GLC 63 S E Performance achieves a significantly high output through its smaller 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a highly capable hybrid drive system. The main component of this model’s powertrain is the tiny but mighty M139l engine, the same engine used in the AMG C 63 S E Performance. The handcrafted inline four-cylinder engine features an electric exhaust gas turbocharger, which is the world’s first series-production engine to feature a component like this, which was derived from the technology employed in the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One team race cars.

The V8 engine is suffering a slow death at the hands of electrification, though one brand is continuing to offer them in a wide range of its models.

The E Performance hybrid system coaxes the M139l’s 469 hp output to a total power output that trumps every other AMG SUV model available in 2024: 671 hp combined. The hybrid system consists of a permanently excited synchronous 201 hp electric motor paired to the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and sources energy from a high-performance battery. The electric motor is positioned on the rear axle and is integrated with an electronically shifted two-speed transmission and an electronically controlled limited-slip differential. The Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S E Performance is the most powerful and quickest combustion-engine AMG SUV in the current AMG SUV lineup and is accompanied by an MSRP that is significantly lower than models like the GLS 63 SUV.

1 2025 Mercedes-AMG EQE SUV

0-60: 3.4 seconds

Engine

Dual Permanently Excited Synchronous motors

Horsepower

617 hp

Torque

701 lb-ft

Top speed

149 mph

The quickest AMG SUV in the Mercedes-AMG lineup is an EV. That doesn’t come as a surprise, considering that an electric vehicle can harness all of its power on the go. That’s why this 5,768-lb SUV can sprint to 60 mph from a standstill in 3.5 seconds. The two electric motors that the Mercedes-AMG EQE SUV relies on for forward momentum are positioned on the front and rear axle and collaborate with the Mercedes-AMG Performance fully variable 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system. Although rated for an output of 617 hp, when using the RACE START with the Boost function, the output temporarily jumps to 677 hp.

Powertrain aside, the AMG EQE SUV is underpinned by features like a standard rear-axle steering system, the Mercedes-AMG Active Ride Control system with electromechanical active roll stabilization, and the AMG high-performance braking system. While no thrum of an engine is available, Mercedes-AMG compensates for this with the AMG sound experience system in the EQE SUV to further the excitement of the all-electric performance SUV’s driving experience.
