How Long Do Lexus Cars Last? Lifespan And Expected Mileage

A common and simple question asked by many potential luxury car buyers is “how long do Lexus cars last?” Well, the answer isn’t always straightforward due to the varying powertrains and other tech found in each model, from the sensible ES sedan, to the LC sports coupe. With that being said, Lexus, in general, is a reliable brand with cars that should keep rolling for longer than the industry average. Of course, any car can drive forever as long as you keep replacing parts when they break, but that just becomes a “car of Theseus” at that point. The thesis of this article is that Lexus’ cars don’t break as often or as quickly as the competition.

Here is everything you need to know about the most reliable Lexus models, the brand as a whole, and how to keep them running for two decades or more.

This article takes a broad approach to Lexus as a brand while using some specific models as examples. Claims made about Lexus as a brand might not always reflect on every model and model year. Dependable sources with expertise on maintenance, common problems, and reliability concerns were referenced, with a complete list provided at the end of the article.

Warranty Cover And Routine Maintenance

Here are the five types of warranties Lexus offers:

Basic Warranty

The basic warranty offered by Lexus lasts for 48 months or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. According to the brand, it covers repairs and adjustments needed to correct defects in materials or workmanship on any part supplied by Lexus, with a list of specific exclusions. There are too many to list here, but some of the most common found across most automotive warranties include damage caused by theft, accidents, fire, abuse or negligence, and misuse (like damage caused by racing, for example).

Powertrain Warranty

The powertrain warranty Lexus offers is good for 72 months or 78,000 miles, whichever comes first, and excludes the same situations as found in the basic warranty. It covers repairs to components of the engine, transmission and transaxle, front-wheel-drive system, and all-wheel-drive system. Some of the covered parts within those regions include the block and head and all internal parts, timing belt and cover, and more found within the engine. Other parts include all internal transmission parts, the driveshaft, axles, differential carrier assembly, and more.

Hybrid Warranty

The hybrid warranty lasts for eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. It covers the Hybrid Battery Control Module (battery voltage sensor), Hybrid Control Module (power management control module), and Inverter with Converter. You can also get the hybrid battery warranty, which is good for ten years or 150,000 miles; it’s only available for 2020 models or newer.

Corrosion Perforation Warranty

The corrosion is good for 72 months, regardless of how many miles you put on your car. It covers the repair or replacement of any original body panel that suffers from perforation due to corrosion or rust, and is still subject to the exceptions found on the basic warranty page.

Parts Warranty

The Lexus service parts warranty lasts for twelve months, regardless of mileage, from the date the parts were installed, or the applicable new-car warranty – whichever is greater. Lexus explains how any repair or replacement that becomes necessary because of a defect in the service part is warrantable. Exceptions include parts for which the owner cannot provide proof of an installation date, parts that are not considered a normal maintenance item, and labor is not warranted for over-the-counter service part replacements.

Which Brand Makes The More Reliable SUVs? Toyota Or Lexus?

Lexus is more reliable than Toyota, right? Well, sure… Usually. Let’s find the exceptions.

Highest Mileage Lexus Cars

Long In The Tooth, But Still Biting

One of the best Lexus models for longevity is the Lexus LS400. There are plenty of examples of Lexus models reaching well over 200,000 miles, but one in particular broke records. Matt Farah’s LS400 reached over 1,000,000 miles this year. Pictured above is not his exact car, but his was another white first-generation LS400 with a hearty V8 engine that kept on running for road trip after road trip.

Another example of a high-mileage Lexus model is a 2014 Lexus CT200h that broke the million-mile mark. Under the hood was a 1.8-liter four-cylinder hybrid that makes 134 horsepower, so it’s not incredibly impressive by power standards. However, this mighty hybrid achieves 42 mpg combined, which surely helped it chug along to the finish line and beyond.

J.D. Power’s Take On Lexus Lifespan

What The Experts Say

In a recent report on vehicle longevity, J.D. Power answers the question “how long does a Lexus last?” The answer to that question is always dependent on maintenance and other factors, but J.D. Power provides insight into the most reliable brands and why they keep running. The organization’s 2024 study on U.S. vehicle dependability found that Lexus had the fewest problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) of every brand sold in America. To be specific, Lexus models showed 135 PP100, with the runner-up being Toyota at 147 PP100. Both are well below the study average of 190 PP100.

Ensuring Lexus Longevity

The best way to ensure a long Lexus life expectancy is with proper care and maintenance. This includes staying on top of your Lexus model’s maintenance schedule, paying attention to unusual sounds, smells, sights, and more in relation to your car, and seeing professionals if you’re unsure of any potential problem. Lexus longevity is among the best, and since the luxury segment isn’t always full of the most reliable cars, Lexus stands out.

When people ask “how many miles can a Lexus last,” the answer always depends on how well the owner stays on top of oil changes, filter replacements, checking the battery, brakes, and other routine maintenance. These checkups should occur every 5,000 miles, or about every six months, depending on how often the car is driven. Most of this can be checked and done at home with minimal tools, but any dealership or independent mechanic can help.

Most Reliable Lexus Models On Sale In 2025

Lexus currently sells a dozen core models, not including every hybrid and plug-in version of each model. Here are the two most reliable models on sale for the 2025 model year, based on J.D. Power and KBB reliability scores.

2025 Lexus GX

When we drove the new Lexus GX, we found it comparable in capability to legends like the Land Rover Defender and Mercedes-Benz G-Class. The best part, though, is that this model is shaping up to be one of the most reliable Lexus models on sale today. Though this generation has only been out for a couple of model years, the GX has an average J.D. Power quality and reliability score of 87/100 over the last five years. Kelly Blue Book also rated the GX’s reliability at a 4.7 out of 5. Its new 3.5L twin-turbo V6 still needs time for more accurate results to appear, but it’s off to a good start.

“It might not come as a shock to anyone, but the SUV developed a decade and a half later is better in every way. On the road, the GX exhibits some characteristic body-on-frame vibrations over rough pavement, but it’s nicely damped to keep occupants comfortable.”

2025 Lexus UX

The next most reliable new Lexus is the UX. All four trims of this Lexus SUV have the same hybrid powertrain: a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder standard hybrid that makes a combined 196 horsepower. As of now, the hybrid seems to be one of the most reliable models. J.D. Power has scored the last five model years an average of 83/100 in quality and reliability, while Kelley Blue Book gave it a 4.6 out of 5. Both are well above-average scores for its respective luxury SUV class.
