Ram 1500 Trucks Reach A Major Milestone In Detroit

Stellantis’ Sterling Heights Assembly Plant (SHAP) just hit a major milestone, rolling its two-millionth Ram 1500 off the line on April 16th. The celebratory truck? A Flame Red 2025 Ram 1500 RHO, the brand’s newest high-output off-road warrior. This achievement is not just about volume; it highlights a remarkable turnaround for a Michigan facility that once faced an uncertain future and is now pivotal to Ram’s multi-energy strategy.

The landmark RHO joins the Warlock and Rebel trims already being produced at SHAP, showcasing the plant’s capability in handling Ram’s diverse lineup. Ram Brand CEO Tim Kuniskis acknowledged the complexity, stating, “The Sterling Heights Assembly Plant is a core facility… tasked with the difficult responsibility of assembling the Ram 1500, a nameplate with ten trim levels and thousands of configurations.”

Hitting two million trucks is especially impressive considering SHAP’s history. Just six months after celebrating its 40th anniversary under Stellantis ownership, the plant marks this production milestone. Back in 2016, Stellantis (then FCA) announced a bold plan to convert the facility from building cars to churning out the hugely popular Ram 1500 pickup. The transformation was swift, with the first 2019 model year Ram 1500 emerging in March 2018.

SHAP Plant Manager Chuck Padden captured the sentiment: “Not that long ago, SHAP’s future was in doubt, so this is a remarkable accomplishment, and I am so proud of this workforce for their resilience and dedication.” The plant’s near-death experience makes this milestone a testament to strategic investment and workforce adaptability in the heart of truck country.

Stellantis Had Such A Bad 2024 That Fiat Looks Positively Healthy

Fiat is desperate for customers to buy its sole offering, the 500e, but at least it’s not doing as badly as other, “bigger” brands under the umbrella.

The milestone is a needed spot of good news for Stellantis, following turmoil late last year when CEO Carlos Tavares was pushed out amid concerns that he was damaging relationships with suppliers and compromising the company’s long-term viability by focusing on short-term profits. The proverbial chickens are possibly coming home to roost, as U.S. sales fell 12 percent in the first quarter of this year, and were down 15 percent in 2024. Stellantis has since announced that it will launch multiple new models, run more ads, and offer dealers more aggressive incentives.

Powering Ram’s Electrified Future

Looking ahead, the factory will continue to provide a variety of powertrain options. That future is already taking shape thanks to a recent $235.5 million investment announced in 2024. This cash injection is specifically gearing up SHAP to produce the Ram 1500 Ramcharger – a range-extended electric truck designed to eliminate range anxiety – alongside Ram’s first-ever battery-electric light-duty pickup, the Ram 1500 REV.

Ram Will Have First PHEV Pickup To Market

Ram is flipping the schedule of its electrified pickups. The range-extended Ramcharger with a gas engine will now arrive in 2025.

This aligns with Stellantis’s broader strategy, transitioning its production facilities to handle next-generation products built on flexible, multi-energy platforms. These platforms are engineered from the ground up to accommodate traditional internal combustion engines, hybrid systems, and fully electric powertrains, giving Ram the agility to meet shifting market demands and emissions regulations head-on. As SHAP celebrates its two-millionth Ram 1500, the facility is not just hitting milestones but working towards building the possible future of the Ram brand.
