Tesla Robotaxi Will Have Charging Tech No One Else Has Got Right

When Tesla delayed its robotaxi launch event by two months, CEO Elon Musk said that the extra time would allow them to “show off a few other things.” Now, it seems that one of the few other things Musk was talking about was wireless EV charging – a technology no company has gotten right as of date.

The patent for wireless charging was discovered by X user SETI Park, who posted the documents on the social media platform. The independent patent researcher added the nitty-gritty of Tesla’s WO2024182372 patent, which was filed in February of this year and was recently published on September 6, 2024. In a nutshell, the wireless charging system will have a wall box connected to a charging pad on the floor. The system is said to be capable of estimating and adapting to variations in wireless charging systems.

Which Teslas Are Ready For Wireless Charging?

This isn’t the first time that Tesla has talked about developing a wireless charging tech. The Texas-based automaker confirmed so last year with a $76 million investment. With the upcoming Tesla robotaxi set out to arrive with a fully autonomous feature, it makes a lot of sense that the tech – which will not need human intervention – will come with the breakthrough model when it gets revealed in its unusual launch setting in October.

However, it appears that the robotaxi, expected to adapt the Cybercab nameplate, isn’t the only Tesla model that’s ready for wireless charging technology. The Cybertruck was also discovered to have preinstalled Inductive Charging Headers via its service manual that’s normally reserved for Tesla employees.

An Industry Breakthrough?

If this discovery holds through, Tesla could be the first automaker to master this innovative charging tech that no other car company has successfully done so. Just in the past four years, several automakers have dabbled on the tech – some even claiming to be closer to reality, while others have already given up entirely.

Then again, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The EV maker hasn’t confirmed that it is indeed launching its robotaxi with the inductive charging tech, nor have we seen whether it’s actually an effective and flawless feature. But as always, we’ll keep an ear on the ground until the Tesla robotaxi launches on October 10.
