The Only Cars In America With 200-HP For $30k Or Less

There’s a hard truth in today’s automotive industry that is impossible to ignore: performance doesn’t come cheap. This isn’t something new, as you’ve always had to pony up to get a vehicle with a respectable amount of power, but there have always been plenty of budget heroes that made over 200 horsepower accessible to the masses for under $30,000. However, the list is shrinking, and in 2025 it’s smaller than ever.

Annual price increases have taken a few of our favorites out of contention. For example, the Subaru BRZ starts at $32,210 for the 2025 model year, and, among mid-size trucks, the Chevrolet Colorado has moved up to $31,900. And thanks to price increases in January 2025, the Honda Civic Si doesn’t make the cut anymore.

We wanted to take a quick look at the reasons behind this decline, and then give you a list of all the 200+ horsepower vehicles on the market today that cost $30,000 or less. While you would assume this list would be chock-full of sedans and hatchbacks, it’s surprisingly varied, covering nearly every major automotive segment there is.

The vehicles are listed in order from most expensive to cheapest. MSRP has been used, excluding destination fees, and pricing is accurate as of the date of publication. This list was originally published in January 2025, but was updated with the latest available figures in March 2025.

Barely making the cut for 2025 is Toyota’s entry-level sports car: the GR86. Out of the two boxer twins, it’s the only one that makes it, as the essentially identical Subaru BRZ comes in a bit more expensive, but no matter which one you opt for, you’ll enjoy the same great RWD driving experience. While every other vehicle on this list relies on turbocharging, the GR86 is naturally aspirated, producing a healthy 228 horsepower. Combined with a six-speed manual, and optimal weight distribution, it’s about as pure a driving experience as you can get, and for 2025 you’ll be able to grab one with style thanks to the Hakone edition.

The Dodge Hornet is a new entry on this list. It made the cut (just) after Dodge dropped the price of the entry-level GT. It’s easily the most powerful car on this list, but the Maverick still offers more bang for your buck.

The Hornet is a solid choice in its segment, and we had fun driving it for a week. You can certainly feel the Alfa Romeo roots shine through.

As a departure from the sportier cars before it, it may come as a bit of a surprise to find out that Nissan’s bread-and-butter crossover is pretty potent. With 201 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque, it has more standard performance than nearly every vehicle in its class, but unfortunately, it’s paired to a continuously variable transmission that falls short of the mark. However, cars like this are about the journey, not the destination, and thanks to the comprehensive update it received in 2024, the Rogue is now a much better place to enjoy a road trip than before.

The Honda Civic Sedan Hybrid is just about the perfect car if you don’t need extra space or AWD. Picture this: famous Honda quality, paired with a 200-horsepower hybrid powertrain that returns 50/47/49 MPG city/highway/combined. From our testing, the car has ample power to effortlessly maneuver traffic or highway on-ramps, but don’t quite expect the sportiest experience. For that, you’ll have to move up to the Civic Si, but it doesn’t make any more power, and it will return worse MPG. Food for thought.

The Hyundai Elantra is not only one of the most affordable cars on sale, but it offers a surprising amount of performance too, and we’re not just talking about the Elantra N. Sitting underneath it is the Elantra N-Line, which boasts 201 horsepower and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic for just $28,875. Paired with sportier looks and a revised suspension, it should give the Honda Civic Si a run for its money, but we only wish the company would offer the six-speed manual as an option.

Of course, the Toyota RAV4 makes it onto this list. There’s a reason it’s one of the best-selling vehicles in the world, and that’s because it’s great in nearly every respect, including offering decent performance. The base engine is a tried-and-true 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder that makes a respectable 203 horsepower and can be paired with either FWD or AWD. Don’t think it isn’t fuel efficient, however, as either configuration returns 30 MPG combined. Add to this spaciousness, comfort, and reliability, and there’s no wonder why it’s such a hot seller.

The Toyota Camry remains the midsize sedan to buy if you’re in the market for something comfortable, reliable, affordable, and economical. Every generation has been a winner, and the newest is no different, as it was even named the first-ever CarBuzz car of the year. It comes with a hybrid-only powertrain. Do we miss the potent V6 of the previous generation? Sure, but it didn’t make sense. A hybrid Camry makes sense, as it has enough power to satisfy, and gets excellent gas mileage too.

The Kia Sportage Hybrid is one of those vehicles you may not know about, but you should. Kia’s compact crossover is certified fresh as the brand’s bestseller thanks to its killer combo of price and performance. It comes with three powertrains – a gas engine, a hybrid, and a PHEV version – and, in our opinion, the hybrid is the one to get for a few reasons. First, it achieves 42 MPG city and 44 MPG highway, all while making 227 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. This is more power and fuel efficiency than the combustion-only version, and it starts at a mere $28,590. That’s about as good as it gets, and it’s only getting better for 2026.

It should come as no surprise that the Maverick makes it onto this list because Ford’s smallest pickup continues to be a performance bargain. No vehicle on the market offers as much horsepower for the price, with Ford boosting the engine back up to 250 hp for the 2025 model year. The engine is a no-cost option, too, although there’s a small caveat, as it requires $1,020 extra for AWD. This powertrain is available on every trim, but we most want to try it out on the new Lobo performance trim, which combines it with a new suspension and transmission to get the most out of the pickup.

The aging Jeep Compass doesn’t always get a lot of love, but it’s a highly capable vehicle and a big part of that is thanks to its potent 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. This power plant produces a healthy 200 horsepower across the entire range, making it one of the most powerful vehicles in its class. Combine that with above-average off-road performance (depending on the trim), and you have an adventure partner worth a second look.
